PitchMagpie
Open source

Proposal software you can read, run and keep.

Your proposals hold your prices, your clients and your best writing. PitchMagpie is open source so you never have to take anyone's word for what happens to them.

Why it matters

Open by default.

  • Nothing hidden

    Every line of the web app and API is public. See exactly what's tracked on the client's page and what's stored.

  • No lock-in

    Owners can download a whole workspace as JSON, PDFs and images, and delete it, at any time.

  • Your infrastructure, if you need it

    A commercial licence lets businesses run it on their own servers, in the region they choose.

  • Extend it

    Add integrations as extensions in the codebase, or build on the REST API and webhooks.

  • Built in public

    Issues, plans and changes happen in the open, where you can follow and contribute.

  • Plain technology

    React and TypeScript, Java 21 and Micronaut, PostgreSQL. Nothing exotic to operate.

Self-hosting

Running it yourself.

PitchMagpie is a static web app and a Java API on PostgreSQL (tested on CockroachDB too). Docker Compose brings up the database and API for local use, with a mail catcher so nothing is really sent. It's free for personal and non-commercial use; businesses need a commercial licence.

$ git clone https://github.com/pitchmagpie/pitchmagpie.git
$ cd pitchmagpie
$ docker compose up --build

# in another terminal
$ cd frontend && npm install && npm run dev

# http://localhost:5173 — sign-in links
# arrive in Mailpit at :8025

What you need in production

  • PostgreSQL (or CockroachDB) for the database
  • Java 21 to run the API, or the Docker image
  • Somewhere to serve the static web app, in front of the API
  • An email provider for sign-in links, proposal emails and reminders. Mailjet is supported, including its bounce events
  • Optionally, a Stripe platform account for deposits, and Xero app credentials for the Xero extension

Configuration is through environment variables; the repository's .env.example and backend README list them all.

Hosted or self-hosted?

Most teams use the hosted app: the software is the same, and backups, upgrades and email deliverability are handled for you. Self-hosting is free for personal and non-commercial use. A business running it on its own infrastructure needs a commercial licence, which comes with help from us. You can export a workspace and move between the two at any time.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is PitchMagpie free?

The hosted app is a paid plan, priced per user, with a 14-day free trial. Self-hosting is free for personal and non-commercial use; commercial self-hosting needs a licence. See pricing.

What do I need to self-host PitchMagpie?

PostgreSQL, Java 21 (or Docker), somewhere to serve the static web app, and an email provider. Stripe and Xero credentials are optional.

Can I move from self-hosted to hosted, or back?

Yes. Owners can export a workspace as JSON, PDFs and images at any time.
